the amsterdam flag

The Amsterdam flag, based on the coat of arms of the city, consists of two red lines with a black line in the middle. Often, a line represents a river. In this case the Amstel river. On the black line there are three St. Andrew’s crosses. The crosses used to be part of the coat of arms of an important landowner in the 13th C called Persijn. It is said that the 3 crosses stood for the dangers in the past: water, fire and the plague. The coat of Amsterdam can be found on many historical buildings in the city.

windmills

In the 17th C there were more than 10000 windmills in the Netherlands. They were used for drainage and industrial purposes: saw mills, oil mills, paper mills etc. Nowadays there are still over a thousand windmills. About 25% still function, the rest have been converted into restaurants or houses, like this mill on the outskirts of Weesp.

With over 22.9 million bicycles in the Netherlands, there are more bicycles than inhabitants. The Dutch have on average 1.3 bicycles per person (in the USA 0.3). Most of the country is flat and there are 37,000 km (almost 23,000 miles) of bike paths, which makes it a good destination for bicycle tours. In 2019 the Dutch travelled a whopping 17.6 billion km (almost 11 billion miles) by bike, 25% of all traffic movement is done by bicycle. Join me on a biketour! Info in the bio.

Distillery ‘t Nieuwe Diep. In 1632 the Oetewaler mill was built on this spot to drain the water of the Overamstelsche polder into a little lake called het Nieuwe Diep. In 1880 the mill was replaced by a steam pumping station that operated till 1984. Since 1928 the area is part of the Flevopark. The building nowadays houses a distillery and tasting room and is a popular spot on a sunny day.

The Western islands. At the beginning of the 17th century 3 islands were created on the West side of Amsterdam; the front island, middle island and aft island. Today they are known as the Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland. They used to house the wharfs and storehouses of the Dutch West India Company, and in the 18th century salt stores, fish smokehouses and tanneries. Nowadays it is a nice residential area with hidden gardens.

The house with the green shutters was built in 1590 and is now the oldest residence on the canal.

houseboats

Already in the 17th century there were houseboats in Amsterdam. They belonged to foreign traders in glass-and earthenware who sold their merchandise illegally. In the 19th century there were ships all over the city, they were used as housing for the laborers. The wooden barges were replaced by steel barges. In the 1920’s the number of houseboats increased from 85 to over 1100 due to housing shortage. After the Second World War the number increased once more, especially in the sixties and seventies, the Hippie era. Nowadays there are over 2500 houseboats in Amsterdam.

amsterdam stories

The Montelbaanstoren is an old defense tower on the East side of the old town dating back to the 16th century. The white upper part was added in the 17th century. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. If the alarm was sounded the people from the neighborhood had to form a human chain and pass the bucket to help extinguish the fire. In the 17th century Jan van der Heijden invented the first firehose.

dutch countryside 2

A day in the Dutch countryside. This museum windmill called de Breek can be found in the Etersheimer Braakpolder. The polder which was created in 1632 is located between Edam and Hoorn. Here you can find the lowest point in the Province North Holland: 6,60 meters ( 21,7 ft) below the sea level! After the flooding disaster of January 1916 the clay from this polder was used to rebuild and fortify the dike along the Zuiderzee. The nearby Beemster polder is famous for its cheese and we found a cheese vending machine! The cafe les deux ponts made a great stop for coffee and apple pie.

walkingtour amsterdam

In the former Binnendijksche Buitenveldersche Polder, an area between the Amstel river and the Boerenwetering which had been used for agriculture and recreation, at the end of the 19th Century a new part of the city was developed. As the population started to increase after 1850 an urban development was designed by city architect van Niftrik and later by Kalff. The area was given the name district YY but was soon known as the Pijp, after the narrow drainage canals that were once part of the polder. One of these canals, the Zaagmolen sloot(sawmill canal) was filled in with sand and is now known as Albert Cuyp straat, where from Monday till Saturday you can find the market with the same name. The Pijp used to be a typical working class area, with narrow streets and small houses. Often several families shared an apartment and even single rooms were rented out to families. Living conditions weren’t great. At the beginning there was no running water or a sewerage system. There were communal bathing houses. In the past 15 years the area has become a popular part of the city, with many bars and restaurants. Many inhabitants have created little gardens on their facades. It’s a great area for a stroll.

The St. Nicholas church is the 3rd church in Amsterdam dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. The first church, built at the beginning of the 14th C, was converted into a calvinist church after the Alteration of 1578 and is now known as the Old church. When in the 17th and 18th C it wasn’t possible for catholics to openly worship, a canal house belonging to a rich merchant was used as a ‘schuilkerk’ or hidden church. The building still exists and now houses the Onze lieve heer op solder (our Lord in the attic) museum. The church you see on this photo was built at the end of the 19th C in neo-baroque style.

dordrecht

Dordrecht originated at the beginning of the 11th C at the confluence of the Merwede and Thuredrith rivers. Dordrecht was given city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in Holland. Due to its location between Rotterdam and Antwerp Dordrecht became a trade city. Wool, cloth, grain, timber and wine were the goods that were traded. Its ‘Golden Age’ was between 1350-1450. Between 1368 and 1806 the coins of Holland were minted in the city. During the 80 Years war with Spain (1568-1648) Dordrecht played an important role: in 1572 representatives of 12 cities gathered in Dordrecht to join together in the struggle against Philips II of Spain. They decided to support William of Orange and recognized him as Stadhouder, earning Dordrecht the nickname ‘birthplace of the Netherlands’. Dordrecht boasts more than 1000 listed buildings and is wel worth a visit! Don’t miss the exhibition ‘In het licht van Cuyp’ at the Dordrechts museum (till March 6th 2022).

The Begijnhof is a hidden gem in the centre of the city. Dating back to the Middle Ages, a Begijnhof (Béguinage) was a courtyard (hofje) where catholic ladies lived. It was not a convent, the houses were private property and after the Alteration (reformation) in 1578 the ladies continued living there, but their church was transformed into a Presbyterian church, (the English church)and they could no longer openly worship. In 1671 a schuilkerk (hidden church) was created from two houses opposite the church (nowadays the Miracle church). On the Begijnhof you can also find one of two remaining wooden houses.

amsterdam bar

On a rainy day like today, there’s no better place to shelter than in a bruin café (brown bar) such as Café Hoppe. There has been a café here since 1670. The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income. This explains the cozy interior of the brown bars and the subtle illumination. The sand (sometimes sawdust) that you see on the floor used to protect the floorboards from discoloration due to the chewing tobacco the clients spat on the floor. It also worked as a kind of sanding paper on the wooden floorboards.
